With little public awareness, some consequential changes may be approved by the city of Oakland soon.

Designed properly, BRT could be a real asset, but the design, which dedicates two lanes for buses only, is inappropriate for a road with only two traffic lanes in each direction. There is another way to configure BRT referred to as Curbside BRT, which improves bus service and the pedestrian experience without removing traffic lanes, left turns or parking.

It's the city's responsibility to see that the public is fully aware of choices before they make a decision. Normally, developers with controversial projects, which they are not amenable to change, at least will let the public speak while they pretend to listen. But that is not true with this developer, AC Transit.

It is probably a no go for Telegraph because its 60 percent loss of parking in this up and coming corridor would be devastating. But a Curbside BRT would have enhanced the streetscape and bus service without loss of parking or a traffic lane, and could be acceptable to Berkeley, which nixed the loss of two lanes.
